Rainbow Steampunk Wall Art

by Niamh Baly

Hi All,

This month is all about steampunk – and I was really struggling with the theme as every time I do steampunk pieces, I turn to my browns and distress products. Instead I decided to break out my brand new supplies and have fun creating rainbow texture and colour on a piece of wall art.

To create this piece I started with a piece of corrugated box cut down to size and I peeled off some of the cardboard to reveal the corrugations. I love doing this as it adds extra texture and interest to the background. I then added a mix of texture pastes, glitter pastes and gold leaf foil onto the cardboard and left it to dry (I actually used my heat tool – but leaving overnight is probably better). I then sprayed some gloss acrylic sprays over the surface and added some mixed media embossing powders as well for added coloured texture. Finally I stamped on the background using archival ink and the triangle collage and chicken wire stamp.

For the focal image, I gessoed the large keyhole, the steampunk flourish and the firefly globe. I then coloured them using the same gloss acrylic sprays as before. I decided to leave the lattice white as a place to rest the eye in all the busy colour. I adhered the pieces together using double sided foam tape to give some depth between the pieces.

To finish the wall art I added two hash tag chipboards from the #wisdom pack embossed in black and highlighted with gold wax. To see the full creation of this piece – check out the video below:
