Encaustic canvas art by Niamh

by Niamh Baly

Hi All,

We are still playing around with the beautiful vintage pieces from the September release and today I have a cool canvas to share with you.

This canvas started life over 10 years ago when I was playing with encaustic art and layering collage using beeswax. It had this beautiful vintage patina on it with crackle paints and soft creams, plus the collages images of DaVinchi’s horses. When I was cleaning up my craft room recently I knew I had to repurpose this piece of art and I’m so glad I did.  I started off my stencilling the flourish in the background with distress inks, then stamped over the top randomly with the medallion stamp in a soft grey. I painted all the chipboard pieces with pages grey paint, as it is softer that a true black – particularly for vintage pieces. I also stencilled out the martha stencil onto vintage book paper and played around with placing that over the black medallion piece. Finally I raided my 3D collage stash as the piece needed more of an assemblage feel than a flat piece. So measuring tapes, vintage buttons, beads and leather, fly mesh all got added as well. You can see the full madness of what I pulled out of my collage drawer in the process video below.

Here is a close up of the final piece:
