Keyhole art journal pages by Niamh

by Niamh Baly

Hi All,

I have been playing in my 6 x 6 in Dina Wakley media journal after being inspired by the lovely and talented Jill Wheeler and Michelle Logan   (Captains of Scrap FX and the Design team). I fell in love with the freedom girl mask/stencil as soon as I saw it and I knew it had loads of possibilities. Little did I know!!!

I created two journal pages using the same techniques but changing the colour stories and the literary focus – so I present my Alice in Wonderland and Ariel the mermaid pages.

These pages started off by stencilling in monochromatic colours in the background; in both cases using botanical leave stencils to represent the gardens and seaweed. Then I places the freedom girl stencil off the side of the page so she looked like she was walking or diving into the page. I sponged over the mask with black paint, softening the edges to the stencilled background with some white (and blue in the mermaid page). Then I splattered over the whole page using gold and white acrylic inks.

To finish the page, I adhered the keyhole silhouette to vintage book paper and trimmed out around the image. I then glued it onto my journal page and added an appropriate quote to echo the sentiments of the layout. I was brave and hand lettered these, but you could easily print them out on you computer and incorporate it into your design.
