Steampunk Muse Doll – By Niamh

by Niamh Baly

Hi All,

I have been so excited to share this project with you all, mainly because I am obsessed with making these dolls for all occasions!!! So without further hesitation – meet Stella, my Scrap FX Steampunk Muse (the full video of making Stella is linked below – check it out).

Stella came about after seeing the beautiful Decorative antlers and Steampunk Fairy Queen chipboards, and knowing how amazing they would look on one of my dolls. The doll body starts off as a simple arch shape cut out of a sheet of chipboard, covered in collage papers, washiest, paint markers and found ephemera (zips, lace etc). I have also used the Scrap FX mark making mini stamp, which was the perfect size.

The head and legs were a printable from Little Raven Ink, printed out onto sticker paper, then adhered to chipboard and fussy cut. I coloured in the collar and created a foiled crown for her head. The head was stuck onto the body using double sided foam tape. I painted the Decorative antlers using paint markers, which allowed greater control of here the paint was applied, then added a coat of Nuvo glitter gloss to make it sparkly. I also added the #ownyourtalent chipboard from the #achieve set, as this is a doll to inspire my creativity – and to believe in myself.

I felt bad making the wings, as it meant I had to cut through the Steam punk fairy queen just for her wings – but in the end it was very worth it! I painted the piece black, then applied ink gold wax to give a metallic effect. I also glued watch pieces and found metal latches to the wings to give it more interest and depth.

Finally I filled a small box with magic foam (florist foam would do the same) so that the skewers would be more stable, then collaged the entire box with painted papers and washi. I stencilled the Scrap FX art phase onto tissue paper, then pasted that onto the box as well.

My top tip for this project is to remember to paint both sides of the chipboard – as it will be visible from both sides. This is an object people pick up to have a closer look at – so make it look pretty from all angles!
