Art is… Art journal page

by Niamh Baly

Hi All,

Happy New Year and hello from a brand new design team member. I am so excited to be part of this fantastic team, working with amazing Scrap FX products. Today I am sharing my first project for the year.

Art journalling is my main passion, as it combines all my favourite techniques, mediums and thoughts in one (or in my case 5!) beautifully eclectic book. I often turn to my art journals when I am creatively stuck, and just play until something appears on my page and makes me happy. This page was one of those, just messing around and something magic happened!

This page started as a clean up page in my large Dylusions journal. My first step was to cover both pages with matt gel medium, tear up lots of random collage papers and gel prints I had sitting round in my studio and glue them down. I then filled in any gaps (and painted over the collage) with dylusions acrylic paint. I chose a thinner acrylic so that you could still see the collage through it – watering down most acrylics will do the same thing. I then broke out my stencils, including the Scrap FX stencils Art phrase, Mark Making C border and Mark making D random. Then I added the face as a focus image, using acrylic glazes in the hair so that the background collage was still visible.

My big discovery making this page was the Scrap FX D random stencil makes a fabulous abstract flower when you rotate the stencil around. The shape is just like a large petal, and you could have lots of fun creating multiple shades and overlaying to create a beautiful flower.

To see the full process of this page coming together, click on the video below to go to the Scrap FX YouTube channel. Make sure you subscribe to the channel and click the bell icon to be notified as soon as any new videos are uploaded.

I hope you have a go at playing in your art journals, and experiment with your stencils to see if you can use them to create other shapes.

Thanks for stopping by,

Niamh
